Alien planet has no star, is ‘drifting out there all alone’

Astronomers have discovered an exoplanet that – counterintuitive to what scientists know about planets – has no star.

The planet PSO J318.5-22 does not appear to have a star, an intriguing find for astronomers. The young gas giant could yield insights into exoplanet formation, since the absence of obfuscating starlight will make it easier for astronomers to analyze it.Astronomers have discovered a lonely planet that’s floating by itself in deep space without orbiting a star.

The powerful Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) telescope at the summit of Maui‘s Haleakala volcano in Hawaii first detected the solitary alien world through a faint heat signature 80 light-years from Earth while it was searching for brown dwarfs.

Dubbed PSO J318.5-22, the exoplanet is relatively young at 12 million years old, researchers say. With a mass about six times that of Jupiter, the planet resembles gas giants that orbit young stars, follow-up observations with other telescopes showed. But the one thing it appears to be missing is a parent star. [See Images of the Strangest Alien Planets]”We have never before seen an object free-floating in space that that looks like this. It has all the characteristics of young planets found around other stars, but it is drifting out there all alone,” study researcher Michael Liu, of the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, said in a statement. “I had often wondered if such solitary objects exist, and now we know they do.”

The absence of a bright star could be a boon for scientists trying to understand the nature of planets outside our solar system, only a handful of which have been observed through direct imaging. Researchers typically study these alien worlds through indirect means, such as watching for the dips in starlight that occur when an exoplanet crosses in front of its star.

“Planets found by direct imaging are incredibly hard to study, since they are right next to their much brighter host stars,” Niall Deacon, of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy inGermany, explained in a statement. “PSO J318.5-22 is not orbiting a star so it will be much easier for us to study. It is going to provide a wonderful view into the inner workings of gas-giant planets like Jupiter shortly after their birth.”

The number of known exoplanets has exploded over the past 10 years. Astronomers have confirmed more than 800, but some estimates suggest there are likely be tens of billions of exoplanets in the universe.

PSO J318.5-22 was inadvertently discovered during a survey of brown dwarfs, starlike cosmic objects sometimes called “failed stars” because they are bigger than planets but too cold to flare up into a veritable star.

In their search for the dim red signals of brown dwarfs, astronomers chose to use PanSTARRS 1 (PS1), short for Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, which takes the equivalent of 60,000 iPhonephotos each night.

“We often describe looking for rare celestial objects as akin to searching for a needle in a haystack,” Eugene Magnier of the Institute for Astronomy said in a statement. “So we decided to search the biggest haystack that exists in astronomy, the dataset from PS1.”

In their survey, they spotted PSO J318.5-22, an object redder than even the reddest known brown dwarfs. The researchers watched the planet for two years and concluded that it lies in a collection of 12-million-year-old stars called the Beta Pictorismoving group.

Observations with other telescopes found signatures in the cosmic body’s infrared light that are best explained by it being young and low-mass. In fact, PSO J318.5-22 is one of the lowest-mass free-floating objects known, the researchers say.

The discovery will be detailed inAstrophysical Journal Letters but the study is available online now on the preprint service Arxiv.

Baiting the Veterans

Thank you Laura! I suggest people look into NVC nonviolent communication. This technique teaches people to communicate more clearly and productively even with “enemies” so that everyone can get what they need and resolve problems. It has worked even with adversaries in some bloody African civil wars so I feel if we give it a chance it can work in America too. (It was invented by an American)

Many people who know me as a peace-loving, faery-gardening, Tarot reading Medical Intuitive and Intuitive Life Coach will be surprised to learn that my ex-husband was a Vietnam Vet (yes, there was an age difference), and that my closest romantic soul connection (until David appeared in my life) was a Veteran of both Operation Desert Storm and Afghanistan (as a called up Reservist). At some point before I met him, he was also recruited by, but ultimately opted not to join The Delta Forces. Both of these men, in their own ways, are among the most intuitive/psychically gifted people I’ve ever encountered. For various reasons, I’ve maintained contact with neither of them; however, they do represent some complex interactions I’ve had with Veterans and their individual stories.

My ex-husband was drafted. He spent his time in Vietnam as a medic, learned near-fluent Vietnamese, kept pet praying mantises to combat mosquitoes…

“Participation Portals” have been Opened to hu-manity

gaia_energy1“Participation Portals” have been opened to hu-manity.

Consciousness levels have risen sufficiently to permit these openings.

Such Participation Portals have been available to Hue-Beings, but narrowness of these has prohibited entry by those residing in the lower 3D-4D.

hu-manity energetic levels are at near Hue-manity entry levels.

Opening of these Participation Portals to hu-manity portion of Gaia populace is intended to stimulate final step of hu-manity individuals from hu-being to Hue-Being.

The manuscript of survival – part 364

Thank you Aisha!

Let us begin this missive by saying that much has been set into motion these last few days, and much of this will in turn engender even further influxes that again will engender even more changes. So in some ways, we can say that these energetic emissions line up, nose to tail, in a never ending cycle of information that will take you all by storm. This will perhaps not be news to any of you, as you have already felt these waves slamming into you, but in a rather interesting manner, we hasten to add. For what you are experiencing now is happening at a very different level than before, and as such, you have been given a whole lot of new toys to play around with. We use this word, even if it may be construed as a rather flippant one, but trust is when we say that…

Gibbous Moon Phase: trust, analyze, process, digest

Moon: Aries

The planets are making many angles to each other today, which means a lot happens in life. Additionally, the Moon has moved to Aries, a cardinal sign, and activates the Black Moon. It’s one of those “rebirthing” days for Cancers, Capricorns, Black Moon in Cancer, or Black Moon in Capricorn. (Hang in there, guys. The Black Moon’s transit through Cancer is half over. Remember that you are on the hero’s/heroine’s journey through the underworld and this requires that we surrender to the process. Don’t lose sight of the fact that a great spiritual reward is waiting at the end.)

There is “wide swing” today, with situations and feelings vacillating back and forth, mainly between anger and love. The undercurrent is a feeling of being all over the place, uncontained, or out of control. This is the result of things (and people) undergoing change. Our mission is to stay centered and to keep things centered amidst the wide swing.

Today is the last day before the Full Moon of the Full time of year. Full phases bring things to fullest potential, fullest expression, fullest understanding. Energetically speaking, this is the “lightest” time of year – meaning the most enlightened. Light often blinds and shocks. Recall that the New Moon on October 4 opposed Uranus, the Planet of Change, Surpise, and Shock. The Full Moon phase brings to fullest light anything that was present or in process or intended back at the New Moon. Those themes have been worked all month long and reach a sort of apex with the Full Moon phase. The themes are then refined throughout the remainder of the month.

But today is Full Moon Eve and the astrological aspects will bring on the fever. Anger needs to be checked today. It is best turned over to a higher power like the Kalis (the Wisdom Goddesses, a.k.a. the Mahavidyas). Because Mars is in opposition to Neptune today, spiritual connection is empowered. If something gets too tough to handle, walk away from it. Let a short amount of time intervene to change up the situation. As mentioned, there is wide swing and rapid change today so things will flip back and forth. This also means the power to change is in our hands as well.

Both the Sun and Venus are disseminating themes involving the archetypal energies of the eagle and the dove. There is much one could say about this. What do these energies symbolize for you? How do they interrelate? In what ways are you (or someone else) like both? Contemplation on this will unlock personal understanding of something that is happening in your life. Let their medicine teach you. And if you spot either an eagle or a dove today, take note. Insight and revelation are offered about the situation you are in or are thinking about when you spot one.

Happy Full Moon Eve, everyone! Stay centered and focused as the change continues.
