PERHAPS in response to the intensity oftoday‘s supersized Full Moon, our planetary aspects for the week ahead seem to mostly call for attitude adjustments and a reconfiguration of old thought patterns.

Today‘s lunation is called a “supermoon” because it occurs while the Moon is at its closest proximity to the Earth (at perigee). So it is not an optical illusion that this Full Moon looks larger than most — it actually is, according to SpaceWeather.com, “as much as 14% closer and 30% brighter than other Full Moons of the year.”

FULL MOONS are always times of great potential, as we have greater access to the treasures that lie hidden in our unconscious and subconscious minds when the Moon is at the peak of its cycle. Light shines into the darkness, and we become more aware of what is within us, as well as what aspects of ourselves are asking to be expressed more fully in the outer world.

Today‘s Full Moon is especially strong, not only because it is a supermoon, but because Saturn is very closely squaring (90 degrees away from) both the Sun and the Moon. Saturn’s involvement in this lunation brings a serious element to the game, and requires us to be clear about our motivations and desires as we decide what our next steps should be.

On top of that, Mercury and the Sun are aligned in Leo in the Full Moon chart. Since Mercury represents our conscious mind, this alignment increases the potential for new, creative ideas to come into our awareness. At the same time, the Saturn square will make sure we maintain our awareness of what is possible, and that we integrate those insights in a practical way into our daily lives.

THE MOST IMPORTANT aspect of the coming week is a quincunx between Neptune and Jupiter, exact on Thursday. A quincunx occurs when two planets are separated by 150 degrees. According to astrologer Bil Tierney, a quincunx helps with “breaking down and removing those non-effectual attitudes that interfere with our ongoing growth.”

This Neptune-Jupiter quincunx requires that we interrupt those old patterns of thought and belief that get in the way of our accessing the deeper wisdom that lies within us. As long as we hold onto the old perceptions and interpretations of reality, we will remain in the realms of confusion, disillusion, and frustration.

But, when we consciously recognize how old thought patterns have controlled us — instead of us directing and being in command of our thoughts — we start to move beyond those places of discomfort and disharmony. We realize we can think in new ways, that we are not at the mercy of unwanted (and seemingly unbidden) thought forms and streams of consciousness.

ONCE WE TAKE this leap into new consciousness and self-awareness, we can start to take advantage of the positive energies of both Neptune and Jupiter, rather than feeling at odds with what these planets offer.

Instead of feeling disillusioned and fearful, we can start to access greater trust, faith, and receptivity (Neptune in Pisces). And, instead of feeling overwhelmed and over-reactive, we can start to live with greater joy, spontaneity, and confidence (Jupiter in Leo).

WE WRAP UP the week with a Jupiter-Venus alignment in Leo next Sunday. It’s good that this alignment occurs on a weekend — its influence enhances our playful and carefree natures, which means it would be very hard to sit behind a desk and work. (My apologies to those who have weekend jobs!)

That being said, we usually have only one Jupiter-Venus conjunction a year, and their alignment in Leo occurs only once or twice every 12 years, so if you can, plan to take advantage of the joining of these two planets. Allow yourself the freedom to do what you want to do, to be spontaneous, to enjoy the moment, and let go of needing to get work done or be serious — even if just for a few hours…
