THIS LAST WEEK of August begins quite powerfully with an amalgam of planetary interactions and the Virgo New Moon on Monday. This is the launch of a new lunar cycle that not only pushes us in new directions, but inspires and supports us as well.

The “push” comes from the Saturn-Mars alignment, an influence that has been building over the past two weeks as these two planets have gained in proximity. The joining of Saturn and Mars in Scorpio requires that we find ways to utilize the positive potentials of both planets, since otherwise this could be a volatile combination.

WITH SATURN in Scorpio, we are intensely aware of the laws of cause and effect. Motives are clear and truth is seen. We hold others accountable, and we are also held accountable. Our need to accomplish, to achieve the desired goal, is intensified, and it may be hard to see another person’s point of view.

And yet, if we apply discipline and act with respect — both for ourselves and for others, Saturn in Scorpio offers us rewards for work well done. We gain new inner strength that is based in a deeper knowing of self, and we grow in our ability to maintain our integrity under pressure.

AT THE SAME TIME, with Mars in Scorpio, our emotions and our desires may be so powerful that the expression of that energy can be difficult to rein in. Our passions are heightened, and we are impatient, eager to release the tension through taking action in some form.

When Mars conjoins Saturn, it can be like taming a wild stallion. Patience is needed, and the tamer must be aware of the underlying fears and desires that motivate not only the horse, but the tamer him/herself. With this self-awareness, other-awareness, and the focus on the goal — not the goal of domination, but the goal of collaboration — horse and tamer become a powerful force for positive transformation.

IT IS HELPFUL that Mercury forms a helpful sextile aspect to Saturn-Mars at the time of their alignment. Mercury in Virgo offers clear analysis, practical communication, and attention to detail as solutions for dealing with the pent-up energy.

And, even though Venus is in a challenging square aspect to Saturn-Mars, which indicates some obstacles to be overcome, Uranus forms a harmonizing trine aspect to Venus at the same time.

In non-astrologese, this means that relationships are tested and we may have to deal with bruised egos and hurt pride. But we also have the potential to create new forms of relationship, as we accept our differences and allow each person to fulfill their need for self-expression.

THE NEW MOON itself, occurring in Virgo, provides the opportunity to re-initiate our healing journey on all levels — physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Over the next two weeks in particular, as the Moon grows into fullness, we are encouraged to learn new techniques that will support our coming into wholeness.

The Sabian symbol for the degree of the New Moon is especially reassuring, given the backdrop of the Saturn-Mars influence:

“Two guardian angels: Invisible help and protection in times of crisis.”

I also find it intriguing that the keywords for this symbol — “Strength Within” — are reminiscent of the positive potentials inherent in the Saturn-Mars alignment.

THE CHART for the New Moon also contains an opposition between the Sun-Moon and Neptune, representing the importance of always incorporating the spiritual perspective into any humanly-conceived plans. We become even more aware of this influence on Friday, when the Sun is exactly opposite Neptune in the sky.

Ceres is involved in this interaction as well, being trine Neptune on Tuesday and sextile the Sun on Sunday. When a planet interacts with two planets that are in opposition (180 degrees apart), it provides an outlet for the polarized energies.

As that outlet, Ceres in Scorpio helps us maintain our emotional commitments to others while we are going through deep personal change. And with the help of Ceres, we gain greater self-acceptance “through transforming our own inner negativity and lack of trust into the healing power of love.” (quote from Demetra George in her book Asteroid Goddesses)

Blessings to you in this New Moon week!
