THE FULL MOON on Thursday is our most important astrological event of the coming week — and, since this lunar cycle began with the Solar Eclipse on October 23, it carries the potential for more life-changing impact and insights than most Full Moons.

Even the First Quarter Moon last Thursday (October 30) seemed more significant than others of its kind. There was a definite shift of energy around that day, as we opened more fully to the new life directions that were initiated with the Solar Eclipse.

The heightened energies and the push for change we’ve just experienced were no doubt also related to an increase in the number of high-level solar flares. According toSpaceWeather.com, there were 26 M-level flares and six X-level flares during the last two weeks of October — and many of those occurred in that week between the Solar Eclipse on October 23 and the First Quarter Moon.

THURSDAY’S LUNATION occurs with the Moon in Taurus opposing the Sun and Venus in Scorpio. The potentials inherent in every Full Moon include insights and enhanced awareness (due to the brightness of the Moon) and the need to find new balance between a set of polarities (due to the opposition between the Sun and Moon).

A Full Moon in Taurus provides the opportunity for us to see our core values in a new light. It reminds us of the need for stability and inner peace as a way to manage — and even thrive in — our current life experience. At the same time, with the Sun in Scorpio, we are cautioned not to just “put a smiley face on an empty gas meter,” but to get clear on our underlying motivations and deeper emotional needs.

VENUS plays an important role in this Full Moon for two reasons. As mentioned, Venus is conjunct the Sun at the time of the lunation.Venus is also the planetary “ruler” of Taurus, giving her an elevated position of influence in events this week.

This means that themes of love, heart expansion, resources (financial and otherwise) and relationships are fully integrated into the energies of the Full Moon. We may find in this lunar light new ways to approach these areas of our lives, and new ways to enhance our fulfillment — not by ignoring trouble spots, but by embracing the dark as a necessary complement to the light.

A POWERFUL THREESOME — Uranus, Pluto and Mars — also contribute their energies to Thursday’s Full Moon. Their aspects to the lunation are not overly noteworthy by usual standards (Pluto/Mars trine the Moon, Uranus semisextile), but these three planets are building to a very significant alignment early next week. This means we may get some hints (or even manifestations) during the Full Moon that relate to the upcoming Pluto-Mars alignment (exact November 10) and the Uranus-Mars square (exact November 12).

We’ll talk more about the Pluto-Mars-Uranus effect in next week’s journal, of course. But in the meantime, we’ll want to be aware that the conduits for change (aka the Pluto-Uranus square) are again lining up and could start to flow their energies before the dates of exact aspect.

IN THESE TIMES of change, the importance of remembering to BREATHE cannot be overemphasized. It is no coincidence that so many disciplines — both spiritual and physical — use conscious breathing as a part of their practice.

Women preparing for childbirth learn breathing techniques to help the birthing process. Breath awareness is the foundation for many yoga practices. Abraham-Hicks uses rhythmic breathing as an integral part of the “Getting into the Vortex” meditations. The Optimal Breathing Mastery website explains that”Optimal breathing can prevent many illnesses common to our day.” The list goes on and on.

The bottom line is that when we focus on our breathing, something happens in a very positive way. It aids physical relaxation, it helps us focus, it reduces emotional tension and stress. The LiveStrong website explains the physical effects this way:

“Deep breathing provides your body’s cells with oxygen, which helps you absorb nutrients. It stimulates your lymphatic system to get rid of toxins. Breathing deeply also helps support your central nervous system.”

ALTHOUGH Taurus is an earth sign, and breathing technically is associated with the air sign Gemini, I feel that this week’s Full Moon supports our using conscious breathing. The Taurus connection applies because consciously inhaling and exhaling requires a heightened awareness of our physical body.

Taurus, at its heart, desires inner peace, and uses the five physical senses to help achieve serenity. This is why Taureans are often drawn to music, aromas and foods, beauty in all forms, massage (and hugs!) and nature. Each provides a sensory experience that can comfort the body and soothe the soul.

As we make ourselves available to the gifts of Thursday’s Full Moon, and also prepare for the potentials of the Pluto-Uranus-Mars effect, conscious breathing can both help satisfy the Taurean needs for serenity and comfort, and provide a way to keep our energies stable during otherwise unstable times.
