IF EVER there was the right time to make life-changing New Year’s resolutions, this is it! As we discard our 2014 calendars and open our crisp new 2015 datebooks this week, we are also in the building phase of a significant lunar cycle, leading to a powerful and important Full Moon next Sunday.

It’s interesting to look more carefully at the word “resolution,” especially as related to the planetary energies that we are working with. We have the prefix “re,” which means to do again, and the core word “solution,” which is either a method of dealing with a problem, an explanation for something or, in chemistry, a mix of two or more substances.

USUALLY when we think of a New Year’s resolution, we think of finally putting our foot down about something, making a decision “once and for all” that we will change a pattern, break a habit, or improve our lives in some way. It’s interesting, though, to think of the word “solution” as a chemist might — a combination of substances.

Then, when we add the prefix “re-” in front of it, we are adding the element of creating a new form, one that may be similar to a previous version, or perhaps one that is significantly different from anything we have created before — even if we seem to be using the same ingredients as we did previously.

WHO HASN’T HAD the experience of using exactly the same recipe twice, and having the outcome be different each time? Humidity and other environmental differences aside, the main difference is us, and the energy we bring to the creative process.

As we imagine the new year and how it might be different than the last, we may want to think about the process of “re-solution” as a form of alchemy, which is defined as “a seemingly magical power or process of transmuting.” The ability to transmute energy is one of the qualities of Pluto — and Pluto is a major influence as we begin 2015.
THE NEW YEAR doesn’t waste any time in letting us know it’s arrived — things get lively on the very first day of 2015, with a Jupiter-Mars opposition on Thursday. This combination of planetary energies can inspire us to take action in a big way, especially in areas where we feel we must reclaim our freedom and independence (Mars in Aquarius) or in an effort to gain the personal fulfillment that has been lacking in our lives (Jupiter in Leo).

There’s not a lot of tact associated with this opposition, and with Mars (the god of war) being involved, tempers can flare easily. We can use this energy to good benefit, however, as long as we stay mindful of what actions will be most beneficial in the long run, rather than letting a short-term emotional reaction define our trajectory.

NEXT WEEKEND provides the biggest wave of transformational energy. The Sun will first square Uranus and then align with Pluto, making Sunday’s Full Moon (at 8:53pm PST) a powerful time for awareness and change.

Pluto, as god of the underworld, is expert at bringing to the surface issues or truths that have been hidden or forbidden. Uranus, sometimes called the god of chaos, often brings events unexpectedly or suddenly. As we well know, these two planets have been at the heart of many important changes as they’ve been working with us over the past three years.

NOW Pluto and Uranus, the two planets most associated with transformation and breakthrough (or breakdown), are playing primary roles in our first Full Moon of 2015. Their goals are to enhance our awareness of some core issues and to empower us to come into alignment with the river of change that is flowing through our lives.

So, when we plan our New Year’s “re-solutions,” we will want to be thinking about new ways to define ourselves, not just externally, but from the inside out. Old solutions and established forms that came into being when we were in a different stage in our evolution will need to be reassessed. Some will need to be modified and others completely renovated, but their ultimate success depends on how well they align with the new, more enlightened vision we have for our lives — both as individuals and as a humanity.

I’LL BE SPENDING New Year’s Day pulling together all the information I want to share at our teleclass on January 8. The class is called“At the Door of a New Age” andwill cover planetary energies for the first six months of 2015. I’m excited to talk with you about the possibilities that lie ahead of us in the new year!

To help you get the most from the class, your registration confirmation email will include a pdf of monthly calendars I’ll be using. If you’d like to print the calendars before the class airs, you can then take notes directly on the calendars as you listen to the class, either live or by replay.

At the Door of a New Age
Your astrology guide for January to June 2015

A 90-minute teleclass with Astrologer Pam Younghans and Wellness Educator Elsie Kerns

Thursday, January 8, 2015
Live broadcast: 4pm PST | 5pm MST | 6pm CST | 7pm EST

Also available by download after class airs | Fee: $25

THE FIRST 6 MONTHS OF 2015 hold enormous potential for spiritual growth and creative change, as the planets challenge each of us to make a quantum leap in some area of our lives.

We’ve been working with the transformational energies of the ongoing Pluto-Uranus square for 3 years now. By the end of 2014, we will have experienced the exact aspect 6 times. But in each of those exact aspects, either Pluto or Uranus has been retrograde, leaving us to balance the need to resolve issues from the past with a strong desire to leap into the future.

March 16, 2015 is the date of the 7th and final exact square between Pluto and Uranus – and on that date, both planets will be in forward motion. In other words, it’s all systems go, full speed ahead!

In this 90-minute teleclass, I’ll explain more about what this final Pluto-Uranus square means, and how it relates to the title of the class, “At the Door of a New Age.” I’ll also talk about other exciting and potentially life-changing events in the first 6 months of 2015:

  • The highly-energized line-up of planets in mid-March, which sees Mars aligning with Uranus and both planets trine Jupiter, right before the final Pluto-Uranus square – and just days before an eclipse and the solstice
  • The Total Solar Eclipse on March 20 in the very last degree of the zodiac (29 degrees of Pisces), indicating a time of completion and the need to release old definitions of spirituality
  • The Total Lunar Eclipse on April 4 that activates more events related to the Pluto-Uranus-Mars-Jupiter line-up in March
  • The first months of Saturn’s transit through Sagittarius, and its return to Scorpio on June 14

I’ll also cover the significance of the New and Full Moons for each month, as well as Mercury’s retrograde phases, and other highlights of the first half of 2015. As before, the slideshow will include monthly calendars showing the most important planetary aspects.

I hope you can join us, either “live” as the class airs, or by download afterward!

Your Guide to Planetary Energies for
December 22 to 28, 2014

AS URANUS completes its retrograde phase and comes to a standstill today (Sunday, December 21), we each have a greater-than-usual capacity to focus on what defines us as a unique individual on the planet, as well to perceive how that uniqueness benefits the whole. Uranian themes also involve liberation, and while the planet is in Aries (2010-2019), we are being challenged to free ourselves from the fears that have held us back from being proactive in some area of our lives.

Uranus has been retrograde (moving backward) since July 21 of this year, providing the energetic support for us to come to new levels of awareness, both of our own needs and desires, and of our place in the cosmos. As Uranus now begins forward motion and picks up speed over the coming weeks, we will be more supported in courageously taking action based on those illuminations and truths we have discovered or received.

ANOTHER major event of the week occurs on Tuesday, when Saturn leaves Scorpio and enters Sagittarius. Although I consider all the planets to be our teachers, Saturn is perhaps most suited to be called The Teacher, since its lessons include responsibility, discipline, practicality, self-sufficiency, and self-respect — the foundational qualities for a productive life.

While Saturn has been in Scorpio (since October 2012), the ringed planet has been requiring us to take responsibility for our use of truth and power. We’ve seen concrete results of what happens when we keep secrets, manipulate and coerce, and let our well-being be derailed by suspicions and distrust.

We’ve had opportunities to see what happens when we choose the dark instead of the light, and vice versa. We hopefully leave this Saturn-in-Scorpio time more aware of our own unconscious patterning, and less controlled (disempowered) by it.

NOW, as Saturn enters Sagittarius, the lesson plan shifts. Over the next two years, we will be called to weed out the ancient, outdated beliefs of “right and wrong,” to observe where we tend to be judgmental, where we feel self-righteous, and where we need to be more openminded.

We may see challenges and restructuring within religious organizations and international corporations while Saturn is in Sagittarius, since these are areas “ruled” by the sign. For some, there may be a crisis of faith or ethics as it becomes clear that an old world view no longer suffices.

WE CONTINUE to feel the influence of the Pluto-Uranus square this week — and, actually, for the next three months! Although the aspect was exact on December 14, the two planets are both moving slowly, and will remain within 1 degree of being exactly square (90 degrees apart) until early April.

In other words, we will be working with the themes of transformation and liberation in very tangible ways over the next 90 days at least. This week, those themes may come especially apparent on Wednesday, when Mercury steps into the Pluto-Uranus energy field.

MERCURY represents our conscious minds, our ability to communicate, and our capacity for learning. With the Uranus-Mercury square on Wednesday, we are challenged to think in new ways, to liberate our consciousness and to allow new neural pathways to be created.

With this aspect, especially, we should be prepared to be flexible. Things rarely go according to plan when Uranus is involved, so expect detours, miscommunications, and plenty of static electricity — both literally and symbolically.

AT THE SAME TIME that this heightened energy is making our hair stand on end, Mercury aligns with Pluto in Capricorn. This planetary combination puts the power of our convictions behind our words, and puts words to our instinctive reactions.

In other words, if you’re getting together with family for the holidays, you may find the conversations and interactions even more memorable than usual! On the positive side, let’s call this an opportunity to feel more empowered — except that the greater strength may come not from needing to gain control of the conversation, but from knowing our truth internally, without needing to convince others that we are right.

It may help to check in with what is motivating our words before we speak this week. Are we truly wanting to share an inspired thought with openminded others, and are we equally open to hearing their thoughts and ideas? Or, are the words tumbling out instinctively and unconsciously, without prior consideration for how the room (and we) will feel once the words have been unleashed and are roaming at will?

OUR TELECLASS covering the first six months of 2015 is just two weeks from this Thursday! My class on January 8 is called “At the Door of a New Age” — and I’m excited to talk with you about the possibilities that lie ahead of us in the new year.

Your Guide to Planetary Energies for
December 15 to 21, 2014

By Pam Younghans

AT FIRST GLANCE, the first few days of the coming week appear fairly quiet. On Tuesday, Mercury enters Capricorn to help us focus on what needs to get done, and Jupiter makes a minor aspect with Venus that could correspond with overspending. But we see no major aspects on Monday, nor on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, which could leave us with the impression that not much is going on.

But looks can be deceiving! The effects of tonight‘s Pluto-Uranus square (exact Sunday, Dec 14 at 9:13pm PST) continue in full strength throughout the week ahead. Transformation and liberation are the keywords throughout this time.

And, if we look at next weekend’s aspects, we realize that any lull in the planetary action is merely the universe pausing for a breath before pushing through another wave of changes. The image of a pregnant woman in labor comes to mind, each wave of energy another contraction that ultimately enables new birth to occur.

TWO HEADLINES share the top of the page next weekend. The first headline emphasizes the core Pluto-Uranus themes of transformation that are so familiar to us by now: Venus will align with Pluto and square Uranus on Saturday, drawing our attention to the need for change in our relationships and in how and where we invest our energy and our resources.

These aspects may mark a particularly potent time with regards to how we manage these areas of our lives. This is partly because Venus is stepping into the energy field of the Pluto-Uranus square so close to the date of their exact aspect. But, the potentials for change are also increased because Uranus changes directions next Sunday.

IF YOU’VE BEEN READING this journal for a while, you’re already familiar with my “train in the station” analogy with regards to the effects of a planet when it changes direction. Basically, when a planet comes to a standstill, either preparing to go retrograde (backward) or direct (forward), we can imagine ourselves standing on the platform at a train station.

As the train comes into view, we can feel the platform begin to vibrate and we can hear the engine’s roar. The vibration and noise get stronger as the train gets closer. When the train finally comes to a stop right in front of us, we are feeling the effects most powerfully. Then, when the train reverses direction and pulls out of the station, our awareness of the vibration starts to gradually diminish as the train moves off and gains speed in the new direction.

NOW, imagine that train is Uranus, the planet of rebellion and change, and that the vibration we feel as Uranus enters the station is triggering a similar energy in us — namely our need for freedom and independence in some area of our lives. We may feel more easily irritated when Uranus is so strong, and can take actions that we might have once considered too radical.

We can use this energy in positive ways, of course — to break free from situations and relationships that no longer serve us, that have become too limiting to our growth. And yet, we can overdo the rebelliousness and create havoc unnecessarily.

SELF-KNOWLEDGE and self-awareness are key here. We need to know ourselves well enough to realize what irritations are short-term and what issues have really come to a crisis point, where change is long overdue. With that awareness, we can choose the changes we make, rather than being driven by the heightened emotions of the moment.

And, there’s always the unknown factor with strong Uranus energies. It may be the other person who suddenly states their need for change, or we may experience situations that shift our lives in unexpected ways. Our best response to whatever happens with this influence is to be flexible, and to accept that there are usually benefits associated with all changes, even those that appear less positive at first.

NEXT WEEKEND
is also the December Solstice, as the Sun enters Capricorn and we change seasons, going from fall to winter in the Northern Hemisphere and from spring to summer in the Southern Realms.

While the solstice always marks a time of beginnings, this one is even more important in that regard, since it occurs so close to the other major turning-point events on Sunday: the New Moon and Uranus’ station. (Uranus stations at 2:44pm PST, the solstice is at 3:03pm PST, and the New Moon is at 5:35pm PST.)

In astrological tradition, the chart drawn for the solstice shows themes that will carry through the coming three months. It appears that this solstice — and therefore the next three months — is a powerful time to set new intentions, to break free from restrictions, and to allow the winds of change to do their work.

THREE WEEKS and counting until our teleclass on January 8! I’m calling this class “At the Door of a New Age” — and I’m excited to talk with you about the possibilities that lie ahead of us in the new year.

Your Guide to Planetary Energies for
December 8 to 14, 2014

By Pam Younghans

PLUTO AND URANUS have been leaving their deep imprint on our lives for about three years now. The two planets have been in square aspect (90 degrees apart) throughout this time, dancing in and out of exact aspect as first one, then the other, has gone retrograde (backward) and then forward again.

Each time the square aspect is exact, another wave of change is activated. We may experience an intensification of issues that have already been in our awareness, or we may become aware of new challenges to the status quo. Either way, the Pluto-Uranus square is determined to pry us free from old ways of perceiving and managing our reality.

THIS WEEK, Pluto and Uranus are exactly square each other for the sixth time since this cycle began. While the aspect is exact next Sunday, its influence is by no means confined to a single day. Instead, we can consider the entire month of December as a time for important developments in the longer-term process of change we are currently navigating.

This square aspect is challenging all of us to become more conscious, more empowered, and more liberated. Some of us are dealing with the challenges on more personal levels, if Pluto and Uranus are transiting (interacting with) specific planets or points in our natal astrology charts. These folks are more likely to be experiencing the full effects of the square, with old life structures being completely torn down so that new forms can be built.

But all of us, even those without direct transits, are experiencing the effects Pluto and Uranus moving through two houses of our charts. These houses represent the areas of our lives that are being renovated at this time.

AS PLUTO AND URANUS come into exact square aspect this week, they are setting up the wave of change that will crescendo now through March of 2015, when the seventh and final exact square occurs. This means that situations and events that arise this week are a part of the cycle of change, but are not the first step in the process — nor the last.

It may help us through the challenges of this square to focus on the ways that Pluto and Uranus are trying to help us grow. Pluto’s ultimate goal is to help us gain personal empowerment and a sense of our greater purpose and mission in life. As one of the steps to realizing that goal, Pluto brings forward the patterning from our unconscious that has been keeping us feeling disempowered, and therefore unable to become all that we can be.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE astrology books is The Astrology of Self-Discovery by Tracy Marks. This book is excellent for describing how the outer planets work with us and what their influence may bring forward in our lives.

Ms. Marks explains that when we are working with Pluto, we may:

  • Experience other people dominating us, preventing us from having what we want
  • Be confronted by seemingly insurmountable obstacles or limitations
  • Feel blocked by our own fear: fear of the unknown, fear of humiliation, fear of pain, fear of loss, or a disbelief in our own capabilities
  • Be influenced by habit patterns, unconscious motives and resistances that keep us from seeing clearly and acting effectively

AT THE SAME TIME that Pluto is manifesting these types of challenges, we are working with equally strong energies from Uranus. Ms. Marks writes that Uranus requires that we ask ourselves:

  • Which behaviors or structures in my life need to be liberated, reawakened, or renovated, and which need to be discarded?
  • In what ways do I need to operate more independently, and what must I do to experience the freedom I need?
  • How may I become more attuned to my intuition and more aware of the universal laws that are at work?
  • How may I prepare for sudden and unexpected circumstances to arise — those which I deliberately create, or which occur without my conscious choice? How do I cope with the unexpected, and how do I live with instability?

It’s pretty clear that working with just one of these planets would be a major undertaking — but we, as individuals and as a global society, are working with both at once! Of course we feel overwhelmed from time to time, especially after nearly three years of working with these strong energies — even if we can acknowledge that the ultimate goals of this work are the positive ideals of empowerment (Pluto) and liberation (Uranus).

IN OTHER planetary news, we start off the week with an alignment between the Sun, Mercury and Ceres in Sagittarius. This three-way conjunction emphasizes themes of communication and empathy, and can put us in touch with a deeper need to share meaningful information that will be helpful to others.

We’ll need to watch any tendency to go overboard in that regard, however. A Mars-Mercury semisquare on Tuesday reminds us that there’s sometimes a fine line between being helpful and being smothering. We always need to allow others the freedom to express their lives according to their own inner urgings — even if we can clearly see the folly of their ways from our lofty perch.

THIS IS ACTUALLY a very good opportunity for us to review our own beliefs and biases, and our need to have others understand us. Jupiter is going retrograde on Monday, marking the beginning of a four-month period in which we are meant to search inward to gain deeper insights into our own life philosophies and world view.

So, if our well-meaning advice falls on deaf ears, we may want to reconsider our motivations for sharing our words of wisdom. First, we must always pay close attention to timing and to the readiness of the soil when we want to plant seeds. And, even if everything looks primed for sowing, we still must wait until we are invited into another’s garden, rather than tossing seeds over the fence in the hope that they’ll land in receptive soil.

With retrograde Jupiter in expressive Leo, we also may want to remind ourselves that true communication is a two-way street. This will be especially important when Jupiter trines Mercury (Friday) and the Sun (Sunday), since our need to share our thoughts and beliefs will be amplified.

These will be good days to do a self-assessment, to ask ourselves: Am I as interested in hearing what the other person has to say, as I am in expressing my own truth? When was the last time I fully listened, instead of spending a conversation inwardly preparing for what I would say next? In other words, how openminded am I, really?

OUR 2015 TELECLASS is just four weeks away! As mentioned last week, when you register for the class, you’ll receive a pdf of the monthly calendars with planetary aspects. This makes it easy for you to print them out ahead of time, so that you can write your notes directly on the calendars during the class, or when listen to the replay later.

Your Guide to Planetary Energies for
December 1 to 7, 2014

AS WE NAVIGATE the planetary aspects that are working with us over the coming week, we need to keep in mind that the influence of the Pluto-Uranus square is building again. The two planets will be exactly square (90 degrees apart) on December 14 — just two weeks from today.

Since we’ve already had five exact squares, we are almost getting used to the instability that corresponds with this Pluto-Uranus combo. I say “almost,” because most clients these days are asking “when do we get back to normal life again?”

I do think there will eventually be a new status quo, but if the planets succeed in their work, that new reality will look very different than what we considered “normal” back in 2011, before the Pluto-Uranus square began. But, I’m getting ahead of myself, since that’s more of a conversation about 2015 and beyond …

THIS WEEK is a bit of a rollercoaster, with several easy aspects interspersed with challenging ones. It makes it difficult to speak in terms of an overall theme for the week, so forgive me iftoday‘s Journal seems a bit disjointed — on the other hand, perhaps we can use that lack of focus as a hint about the week ahead.

We start off with a strong sense of our own capabilities on Monday (Saturn sextile Mars), but by Tuesday we can find ourselves reverting to old patterns of insecurity (Chiron semisquare Mars). This leads us into Wednesday, when we struggle between choosing the “safety” of holding on to the outmoded systems of the past vs. being willing to take that risks that are involved in embracing the new (Uranus sesquisquare Saturn).

THURSDAY looks like the most supportive day of the week, both for being open to change (Uranus trine Sun) and for generally enjoying life and other people (Jupiter trine Venus). Mars also changes signs on Thursday, leaving conservative Capricorn and moving into freedom-loving Aquarius. This subtle shift can help us take new roads instead of continuing to follow the same track that we’ve been on.

Friday is another glass-half-full/glass-half-empty kind of day. Chiron squares the Sun, bringing forward self-doubts that need healing before we can make significant progress. The Uranus-Mercury helps us break free from old thought patterns and opens our minds to receive the gifts of higher consciousness — but the Chiron-Mercury square on Saturday means we may need to heal our trust in the Universe before we completely allow in the new information.

THE FULL MOON on Saturday is in Gemini, so hopefully will help us find the clarity we’ve been searching for all week. Mercury, the Sun, and Ceres all oppose the Moon, emphasizing the need to nurture ourselves by choosing thoughts that are positive and supportive.

The Sun is aligned with “the Great Attractor” at the time of the Full Moon. As with many objects in space, there is a lot of scientific and astrological conjecture about what this Great Attractor is and how it affects us.

Here’s what astrologer Philip Sedgwick tells us about the Great Attractor in The Soul of the Sky, part of his CD set, The Galactic Trilogy:

The enormous gravity of the Great Attractor actually bends light around it. It bends the light so much, that a glimpse of what is behind it can be taken. This quality of gravitational lensing provides clear behind-the-scenes insights, while simultaneously offering other refractive illusions.

In other words, the Great Attractor provides energies of both great insight and great illusion. It is helpful that we have the Moon in Gemini to anchor the logical side of the equation. Perhaps this Full Moon will provide us with just the right balance of higher-dimensional information and concrete, this-world knowing, so that we can utilize the higher-level insights we gain in productive ways.

IT’S FASCINATING, given this information about the Great Attractor, to now read the Sabian symbol for Saturday’s Full Moon:

Two Dutch children talking to each other, exchanging their knowledge: The need to clarify one’s experience through actual contacts with like-minded individuals.

Here’s an explanation of the meaning of this symbol, by astrologer Dane Rudhyar:

“Transcendent experiences and supernormal faculties must be tested and clarified through the use of normal and collectively tested means of communication. In old tribal cultures, one person’s “great dreams” were accepted as valid and acted upon only if another person had a similar dream. The need for objectivity must be met.”

Given all of this, it sounds like our best option now is to be open-minded, but to verify and validate before we take action on the information we receive.

I’VE SPENT this holiday weekend creating the monthly calendars that will be part of the slideshow for my teleclass in January — which gives me the perfect opportunity to let you know about a new feature for this class!

For the first time, before the teleclass airs, we’ll be sending out a pdf of the calendars (with planetary aspects) to everyone who registers. That way, you can print out copies of the calendars and write notes on them when you join us for the class on January 8 (or listen to the replay later).

My thanks to the class participant who requested that option — it’s a great idea!

Your Guide to Planetary Energies for
November 24 to 30, 2014

IT’S THANKSGIVING WEEK in the United States. The timing is appropriate astrologically, since the Sun always enters Sagittarius right before the holiday, and Sag is known for a generally more positive outlook than many of the other signs of the zodiac.

Every year, starting around November 21, we have four weeks of the Sun in Sagittarius, supporting greater idealism, good humor, and generosity. Then, right before Christmas, the Sun enters serious-minded Capricorn and we start to feel the pressure of seasonal and year-end obligations.

Funny how that works, year after year, even when we promise ourselves that we will schedule less and relax more! Somehow that Capricorn busy-ness just seems to become part of the air that we breathe in late December.

WE ARE GETTING a bit of a preview of that more serious side of the holiday season this week, in spite of yesterday’s New Moon being in Sagittarius. The underlying theme comes from the Pluto-Saturn semisquare this Thursday, like a persistent drumbeat beneath the other tunes being played during the week.

When Pluto and Saturn form a challenging aspect, as they are this week, we can feel the restrictions of our lives as being heavier than usual, at the same time that the inner urge to transform and change the status quo is heightened. The challenge is to learn a new level of maturity that can cope with situations that are outside of our conscious control, without becoming overwhelmed or derailed.

The gift of meeting the challenge is greater self-respect, and a knowing that we are capable of managing all aspects of our lives, not just when everything is going according to how we wish it would go.

THAT FEELING of heaviness, if we’re not already aware of it, is likely to start building on Tuesday, when Saturn and Mercury align in Scorpio. This could be a good time to look more seriously at important issues, especially with regard to finding out our deeper motivations and desires for the future.

This combination can tend to be pessimistic, however, so it’s important not to let fears or doubts over-run the positive potentials of this alignment. Instead, try to use the energies to do some soul-searching, to analyze the emotions that have arisen, and to set a plan into place that will move you beyond where you’re feeling stuck.

WEDNESDAY looks like it provides some breaks in the heavy cloud cover, with a Uranus-Venus trine bringing opportunities for interesting new activities and interactions. And, the Venus-Ceres alignment in Sagittarius can strengthen our belief in the greater meaning of our lives, and encourages us to take care of ourselves and others as a part of fulfilling our sense of higher purpose.

The Neptune-Sun square on Wednesday may also provide some relief. Usually, we might curse the lack of initiative that can accompany this transit — but with the heavy Saturn-Pluto energies so strong, a little bit of fogginess may be just what we need to let go and realize we don’t have to have everything figured out and in control.

ON THURSDAY, after the Pluto-Saturn energy has peaked (at 8:46am PST), the heavy feeling should slowly start to lighten — especially once Mercury enters Sagittarius (at 6:25pm PST). It will take a few days for that heaviness to fully dissipate, but with the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Ceres all in Sag by the weekend, our good humor and ability to take life more lightly is more supported.

Neptune steps in again on Sunday, this time with a square aspect to Mercury. A lack of mental clarity and initiative may rule the day once again — but I, for one, could use a day sitting by the woodstove, gazing idly into the fire while I sip my tea, and letting the world go by…

IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE that in just a month, we’ll be starting 2015 — which means that my January 8 teleclass is just six weeks away! I’ll include a full description of the class below, or you can just click here to register:

SAVE THE DATE! I’ve just posted an announcement on my blogsite for my January 8 teleclass about the first six months of 2015. I’m calling the class “At the Door of a New Age,” and here’s the title page graphic:

The class will air live on Thursday, January 8 –but if you can’t attend on that day, your registration fee provides you with a recording of the class and access to the slideshow with monthly calendars. Read all about it at http://northpointastrology.blogspot.com/.

Now, on with this week’s forecast:

WE’RE WRAPPING UP some important lessons this week. On Tuesday, two days before our New Moon in Sagittarius, there is a Saturn-Sun alignment in Scorpio.

Saturn is never one to be frivolous. This is the planet that represents the concepts of responsibility, discipline, and patience. As Saturn transits each sign of the zodiac, we are called to embody new levels of maturity and realism related to the themes of that sign.

AS SATURN has journeyed through Scorpio for the past two years, it has required us to take responsibility for our deepest desires, our needs for control and power, and our motivations, compulsions, and addictions. And, since Scorpio rules the processes of death and rebirth, some have found their lessons to be in this area of the human experience, either literally or on psychological and emotional levels.

As the Sun and Saturn conjoin on Tuesday, we come face-to-face with some of the lessons noted in the paragraph above. This is an important opportunity for self-acceptance, as we see hidden or disowned aspects of our psyches reflected back to us by the people and events in our lives.

Once we have owned a truth about ourselves, we have a clear choice of next steps, based on the animals traditionally associated with Scorpio.

SCORPIO is the only sign of the zodiac that has two accepted animal symbols: the Scorpion and the Eagle (or Phoenix, in some traditions). This gives us important clues as to our options this week.

One option is to stay attached to an old definition of who we are, remaining in the darkness that has been uncovered. This would be the choice of the Scorpion, who hides under rocks and stings when revealed.

The other option is to choose the way of the Eagle, who flies high above the landscape. From its vantage point, the Eagle can see both the darkness and the light, but does not judge or cling to either. The Eagle represents clarity of vision and purpose, and shows us that the higher we go, the more we can release defining ourselves or others by choices of the past — even the past of only yesterday.

THE CLEARING and release work that we do early in the week can enable us to begin the new lunar cycle with what feels like a much cleaner slate. Our New Moon on Saturday occurs less than three hours after the Sun enters Sagittarius, emphasizing the theme of opening anew to the adventure of life.

There are many different systems that assign symbolic images to each degree of the zodiac. I quote from the Sabian symbols quite a bit in this journal, but I also like other, more modern systems.

Astrologer Martin Goldsmith, in his book The Zodiac by Degrees, gives this image for the first degree of Sagittarius, where our New Moon is on Saturday:

“On a steep bluff, army veterans reminisce around a dying campfire while their leader surveys the countryside by the light of the rising sun.”

The descriptive phrases for this image, which we can relate to the purposes of the lunar cycle that begins next weekend, includes:

“Looking toward new possibilities when an old trip is burnt out; setting clear goals that challenge one’s best talents; figuring out which life battles really matter; ignoring unimportant problems and strengthening one’s heart for the fight ahead; instigating collective action based on a clear vision of the future; cooperation and comradeship based on shared ideals; long-range plans and foresight; periodically reassessing one’s progress toward grander goals.”

THIS IS CERTAINLY a time to be looking forward rather than to the past. Pluto and Uranus have been doing a very good job of dismantling the old structures, so it is up to us to create new foundations for the future. With the Sun in Sagittarius until December 21, those foundations will be most successful if they are based on what we truly believe in, and what adds greater meaning to our lives.

One last note about this week — Chiron stations direct next Sunday, so there is an added emphasis on healing now. Chiron in Pisces reveals where we hold fear instead of trust, and where we may choose self-sacrifice rather than unconditional love.

As Chiron is at a standstill this week, we are supported in embracing that wounded aspect of self, taking the fearful child into our hearts, to that place where only Trust, Love, and Healing can abide.

Blessings,
Pam

Your Guide to Planetary Energies for
November 3 to 9, 2014

By Pam Younghans

THE FULL MOON on Thursday is our most important astrological event of the coming week — and, since this lunar cycle began with the Solar Eclipse on October 23, it carries the potential for more life-changing impact and insights than most Full Moons.

Even the First Quarter Moon last Thursday (October 30) seemed more significant than others of its kind. There was a definite shift of energy around that day, as we opened more fully to the new life directions that were initiated with the Solar Eclipse.

The heightened energies and the push for change we’ve just experienced were no doubt also related to an increase in the number of high-level solar flares. According toSpaceWeather.com, there were 26 M-level flares and six X-level flares during the last two weeks of October — and many of those occurred in that week between the Solar Eclipse on October 23 and the First Quarter Moon.

THURSDAY’S LUNATION occurs with the Moon in Taurus opposing the Sun and Venus in Scorpio. The potentials inherent in every Full Moon include insights and enhanced awareness (due to the brightness of the Moon) and the need to find new balance between a set of polarities (due to the opposition between the Sun and Moon).

A Full Moon in Taurus provides the opportunity for us to see our core values in a new light. It reminds us of the need for stability and inner peace as a way to manage — and even thrive in — our current life experience. At the same time, with the Sun in Scorpio, we are cautioned not to just “put a smiley face on an empty gas meter,” but to get clear on our underlying motivations and deeper emotional needs.

VENUS plays an important role in this Full Moon for two reasons. As mentioned, Venus is conjunct the Sun at the time of the lunation.Venus is also the planetary “ruler” of Taurus, giving her an elevated position of influence in events this week.

This means that themes of love, heart expansion, resources (financial and otherwise) and relationships are fully integrated into the energies of the Full Moon. We may find in this lunar light new ways to approach these areas of our lives, and new ways to enhance our fulfillment — not by ignoring trouble spots, but by embracing the dark as a necessary complement to the light.

A POWERFUL THREESOME — Uranus, Pluto and Mars — also contribute their energies to Thursday’s Full Moon. Their aspects to the lunation are not overly noteworthy by usual standards (Pluto/Mars trine the Moon, Uranus semisextile), but these three planets are building to a very significant alignment early next week. This means we may get some hints (or even manifestations) during the Full Moon that relate to the upcoming Pluto-Mars alignment (exact November 10) and the Uranus-Mars square (exact November 12).

We’ll talk more about the Pluto-Mars-Uranus effect in next week’s journal, of course. But in the meantime, we’ll want to be aware that the conduits for change (aka the Pluto-Uranus square) are again lining up and could start to flow their energies before the dates of exact aspect.

IN THESE TIMES of change, the importance of remembering to BREATHE cannot be overemphasized. It is no coincidence that so many disciplines — both spiritual and physical — use conscious breathing as a part of their practice.

Women preparing for childbirth learn breathing techniques to help the birthing process. Breath awareness is the foundation for many yoga practices. Abraham-Hicks uses rhythmic breathing as an integral part of the “Getting into the Vortex” meditations. The Optimal Breathing Mastery website explains that”Optimal breathing can prevent many illnesses common to our day.” The list goes on and on.

The bottom line is that when we focus on our breathing, something happens in a very positive way. It aids physical relaxation, it helps us focus, it reduces emotional tension and stress. The LiveStrong website explains the physical effects this way:

“Deep breathing provides your body’s cells with oxygen, which helps you absorb nutrients. It stimulates your lymphatic system to get rid of toxins. Breathing deeply also helps support your central nervous system.”

ALTHOUGH Taurus is an earth sign, and breathing technically is associated with the air sign Gemini, I feel that this week’s Full Moon supports our using conscious breathing. The Taurus connection applies because consciously inhaling and exhaling requires a heightened awareness of our physical body.

Taurus, at its heart, desires inner peace, and uses the five physical senses to help achieve serenity. This is why Taureans are often drawn to music, aromas and foods, beauty in all forms, massage (and hugs!) and nature. Each provides a sensory experience that can comfort the body and soothe the soul.

As we make ourselves available to the gifts of Thursday’s Full Moon, and also prepare for the potentials of the Pluto-Uranus-Mars effect, conscious breathing can both help satisfy the Taurean needs for serenity and comfort, and provide a way to keep our energies stable during otherwise unstable times.

Blessings,
Pam

October 27 to November 2, 2014

OCTOBER HAS BEEN, and continues to be, a very powerful month! On top of the astrological events we could foresee — the eclipses and Mercury retrograde — we now have heightened activity on the Sun as well. In the past three days, we’ve had three X-level solar flares, and so far today, another mid-range M-level flare.

Solar flares are explosions on the Sun, and are rated A, B, C, M or X, with X being the strongest. Within those letter designations, there are also levels of potency — so an X-1 flare is at the low end of the X level, and the numbers go up from there.

In “real-world” terms, strong solar flares can affect electromagnetic fields on and around the Earth. Here’s whatSpaceWeather.com reports about these three recent X-level flares:

“There was an X2 on Oct 22, an X3 on Oct. 24, and an X1 on Oct 25. All three of these explosions produced strong HF radio blackouts over the dayside of Earth. In each case, communications were disturbed over a wide area for approximately one hour. Such blackouts may be noticed by amateur radio operators, aviators, and mariners.”

FOR THE MOST PART, science has yet to be convinced that humans are affected by electromagnetic events. But, I would guess that most who are reading this journal are of the opinion that, like the Earth itself, we have electromagnetic fields (auras) around us. And, just like the Earth, we receive and react to fluctuations in the energy field.

So, when SpaceWeather.com reports that HF radio signals were affected by the recent X flares, I think we can accept that part of our experience over the past few days has also been affected by those explosions of energy on the Sun.

TEACHER AND HEALER Jim Self writes this about the effect of solar flares upon us Earth beings:

“As the charged particles pass through us, many things are happening in our emotional field, our thought/mental field and our physical body. Our DNA structure is expanding, and alterations are occurring in the way we receive and understand information, as well as how we experience and express ourselves. These light patterns are providing choice and realignment. Where we put our attention now is more critical than it ever has been before. If we focus on the external changes and challenges, the path of transformation will be far bumpier and less comfortable than if we cultivate allowing, rest and ease.”

Is it any wonder many of us are on edge and/or exceptionally tired these days? There is a LOT going on energetically. Every energy wave requires us to make emotional, mental, and physical adjustments, on both consicous and unconscious levels.

WATERY NEPTUNE takes center stage this coming week, appearing nearly every day in our list of highlighted aspects. This is a very helpful influence as we assimilate the effects of last week’s Solar Eclipse.

Neptune’s lessons are always about Trust (yes, with a capital “T”) and Unconditional Love. When Neptune is in flowing relationship with other planets, we seem to have greater access to those higher vibrational spiritual, creative and emotional aspects of our beings.

FOR THE FIRST HALF of the week, Neptune is fulfilling some of the spiritual/creative unfolding that was promised in last week’s Solar Eclipse. The trine aspects that Neptune formed in the Solar Eclipse chart are exact on Monday (with Venus), on Tuesday (with the Sun), and on Thursday (with Pallas Athene).

That means that the beginning of this week is an especially fruitful time for us to access our creative muse, tap into the perspective of our high heart, and take that next step in our spiritual awareness and evolution.

THE OTHER Neptune aspects this week also support these developments, although there may be a small bump in the road on Friday, when our rational minds rebel against the other-worldly perspective that Neptune requires (Neptune sesquisquare Mercury). But by Saturday, we are feeling more fully in sync with that new perspective, and ready to take action based on the inspiration we receive (Neptune sextile Mars).

That forward progress is encouraged by the other planets, too. On Saturday, Jupiter and Mercury work together to excite us with new creative ideas, while Pluto works with Venus to encourage collaboration with others who share our passion. Even the Jupiter-Mars sesquisquare on Sunday, which is technically a somewhat challenging aspect, may only cause difficulty if we forget to check our egos at the door.

Blessings,
Pam

Your Guide to Planetary Energies for
October 20 to 26, 2014

NINETEEN YEARS AGO, on October 23, 1995, there was a Solar Eclipse in the first degree of Scorpio; this Thursday, we have a Solar Eclipse at that same degree. Most eclipses follow this pattern, recurring at the same zodiac degree every 19 years. This cycle provides a point of reference for us and helps us assess our growth in a specific area of our lives.

The house location of that first degree of Scorpio in our natal chart tells the area of life experience that we are both assessing and challenging with this week’s Solar Eclipse. The challenge may be subtle or it may be more direct, depending on whether this eclipse directly touches on planets or points in our individual charts.

If you have planets or points on the cusp* between Aries-Taurus, Cancer-Leo, Libra-Scorpio or Capricorn-Aquarius, this is an especially important eclipse for you. It signifies a major opportunity to convert, transmute, and transform the expression of a certain aspect of your being. (*For these purposes, let’s define the “cusp” as including 27-29 degrees of the first sign of these pairings, and 0-4 degrees of the second sign.)

For all of us, this Solar Eclipse provides the energy of motivation and focus, to help us evolve the expression of some area of our lives to a higher vibrational level. We are to become self-alchemists, to transform the dross into gold.

THE ASTEROID GODDESS Pallas Athene has her hand firmly on the rudder of this eclipse sailing. The chart drawn for the time of the eclipse shows Pallas Athene at about 2 degrees of Scorpio, with the Sun, Moon, and Venus following closely behind.

Demetra George, in her book Asteroid Goddesses, explains that Pallas Athene in Scorpio brings the unconscious into conscious awareness, often using healing techniques such as hypnosis, past-life regression, and cellular regeneration. She writes that “Pallas Athene in Scorpio is the wisdom of insight — penetrating to the core and grasping the essence.”

When Pallas Athene aligns with the Sun, it increases our access to divine intelligence and strength of will. When aligned with the Moon, it strengthens intuition and psychic ability. And, when joined with Venus, the asteroid supports advancements in the arts, aesthetics, and women’s rights. These themes are all emphasized with Thursday’s eclipse.

ALL FOUR PLANETS in our Scorpio group are also trine Neptune at the time of the eclipse. A trine occurs when planets are 120 degrees apart, and indicates a harmonious relationship, when the planets are working well together.

The involvement of Neptune in the energy of this Solar Eclipse emphasizes the spiritual and/or creative component of whatever begins now. Our ability to have faith in unseen assistance and unknown outcomes may come more easily than at other times. And, referring again to Demetra George’s book, Neptune trine Pallas Athene specifically enhances “telepathic abilities and the capacity for healing using color and music; special talents in the fine arts, film, and photography.”

These Neptunian effects may especially come into our awareness in the week that follows the eclipse, when Venus, the Sun, and Pallas Athene all make their exact trine aspects to Neptune (on October 27, 28, and 30, respectively).

I’M ALSO INTRIGUED by the quintile aspects that Jupiter makes to our foursome in Scorpio at the time of the eclipse. The quintiles are exact the day before (Pallas Athene) and the day after (the Sun and Venus) the eclipse, but their energies are strongly woven into the fabric of this powerful New Moon.

Quintiles occur when planets are 72 degrees apart. Astrologer Bil Tierney writes in his bookDynamics of Aspect Analysis that a quintile “symbolizes an aspirant’s creative soul alignment with the Will of the Cosmos.” But he also notes that “the Will of the awesome, inscrutable Cosmos is not easily channeled through the normally fragmented consciousness of the individual still bound by the limited confines of the personality-centered will.”

This sounds like a major opportunity for spiritual advancement, with a note of caution. Again, quoting from Bil Tierney:

“Quintiles only fulfill their lofty, universal potential once we have struggled to become more self-realized. Otherwise, in an individual still unawakened to the reality of the spiritual identity, the quintile could either remain dormant and inoperative, or else could be uncontrollably activated in a compulsive and abusive manner … To bring the promise of the quintile into productive use could suggest that the individual first understand and accept that mind and matter are essentially one and the same.”

In other words, we need to be at the top of our vibrational game if we want to use this quintile energy at its most positive potential.

ONE LAST NOTE — Mercury goes direct on Saturday, completing the retrograde period that began October 4. Having Mercury retrograde during eclipse season has been interesting, to say the least! But, hopefully, we have used this time to our advantage, reviewing our habits of thought and coming to a better conscious understanding of how to utilize the immense power available to us through our minds.

As Mercury slowly picks up speed in the days and weeks ahead, we’ll be better able to get started on projects that have been stalled. But, we also want to realize that Mercury is still in its “shadow period” until November 10 — in other words, the planet will be going over previously traversed territory until that day, when it again reaches the degree of Scorpio where it originally went retrograde.

The shadow period does not carry the same cautions as the Mercury retrograde phase, but it is worthwhile noting that projects may take a while to get up and rolling during this time. And, with action-oriented Mars entering methodical Capricorn on Sunday, there’s even more support for following the “slow but steady” example of the Tortoise for a while longer.

Blessings,
Pam
