Klabona Keepers is an organization of Tahltan elders and families who occupy and use traditional lands near Iskut, British Columbia known as Tl’abāne, the Sacred Headwaters of the Stikine, Nass and Skeena Rivers.
Description
Known as Klabona by the Tahltan people, the Sacred Headwaters is the birthplace of the Stikine, Nass, and Skeena, three of Northern BC’s major salmon-bearing rivers. This pristine wilderness has been called ‘The Serengeti of Canada’. Thousands of people from the northern interior to the coast depend upon the health of these three watersheds for their livelihood and for the wellbeing of their families and communities. In 2012, to honour the Tahltan nation and thousands of supporters, Royal Dutch Shell abandoned coal-bed methane development in the Sacred Headwaters. Part of Shell’s agreement to leave the area was a promise made by the BC government to ban all other oil and gas companies from the Sacred Headwaters, with a guarantee that further protection of the area would be discussed.
The Sacred Headwaters continues to be at risk. Without Tahltan consent, the government has given an exploratory permit to Fortune Minerals, a mining company with a plan to turn Klappan Mountain into an open-pit anthracite coal mine, 4000 hectares in size. The coal would be exported to a steel maker in Korea.
The project plan includes building 147 kilometres of railway through the headwaters to export the coal, and a 112-km power line linking the mine to the Northwest Transmission Line, a controversial project funded by the BC government that is already drastically over budget. For the past two months, Fortune Minerals has been on-site, actively test-drilling Klappan Mountain for the project’s environmental assessment. Klappan Mountain is right in the heart of the Sacred Headwaters, in the same location as one of Shell’s proposed fracking sites.
This is not the first time Fortune Minerals has pushed into the area without Tahltan consent. The mining company’s presence stretches back to 2005 when an Iskut family erected a blockade to stop Fortune from drilling twenty-five test sites on Klappan. The blockade lasted two months. By mid-September an injunction was issued, warning the Tahltan that if they did not leave they would be arrested. On September 16th, fifteen arrests were made. Nine of the people arrested were elders, and Fortune went back to the drawing board.
Once again, the Tahltan are taking a stand against Fortune Minerals. A number of families and supporters have collected at Beauty Camp at the foot of Klappan, the historic hunting camp on their traditional territory, to send a message to Fortune and the BC government that they are still strongly opposed to a coal mine on Klappan Mountain. The Tahltan issued a 24-hour eviction notice to Fortune on Aug. 16th. The company suspended activity for two days, until Fortune CEO Robin Goad could fly out from London, Ontario to meet with the Tahltan at Beauty Camp. At the meeting on Aug. 18th, Goad stated that Fortune would continue drilling.
For years, and to no avail, the Tahltan of Iskut have been requesting a police detachment in a community of 350 people. But at Klappan, an RCMP base has been set up between Beauty and the Fortune Minerals camp, complete with airplanes and helicopters. There are 6 police officers stationed at the “Klappan Detachment”, suspected by the elders to have been requested by Fortune.
At the protest camp, there is disbelief that a company’s rights trump Tahltan rights in their own territory. “We never doubt that the BC government is behind all this,” said a prominent elder. “Hopefully, this will wake up the investors, to see how we are treated in our own territory.”
Every year, the Tahltan return to Beauty Camp to practise their culture and to pass on knowledge to children and grandchildren. They come together to pick berries and to hunt caribou, moose, and other wild game. This year, the sky above the camp is filled with helicopters and airplanes hired by Fortune Minerals and the RCMP. Excessive air traffic is disturbing the people and the animals, and since Fortune’s arrival, hunting has been difficult.
Please join us to stand in solidarity with the Tahltan Beauty Camp to protect the Sacred Headwaters forever.

Idle No More & Defenders of the Land “Sovereignty Summer” Call To Action | Earth First! Newswire

Apologies for reblogging by reposting but WordPress (or my dialup) refuses to allow me the reblog function for this post-and it has time sensitive info at the bottom. As always there is so much on Earth first Newswire that is worth reading I can’t reblog all of it-so if you have an interest in the environment, GMO’s, indigenous resistance, decolonizing and or cocreating a better world, please do click the link and check them out-my subscription to that blog is my daily dose of realistic hope;-)

(to beautifully recall what we are fighting for in the wonders of natural Florida “Serenity Spell” is another wordpress blog you cannot miss!)

Idle No More & Defenders of the Land Sovereignty Summer Call To Action

24 May

From Solidarity Spring To Sovereignty Summer: An International Callout To All Indigenous Peoples, Supporters, Allies Of Idle No More & Defenders Of The Land

Sovereignty-Summerby Idle No More

Over the past few months, Idle No More has ignited a spiritual fire in the hearts of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples to come together to address issues related to: Honoring Treaties and Indigenous Sovereignty, Human Rights, Deepening Democracy reflecting a meaningful Nation to Nation relationship, and increasing Environmental Protections and protecting Mother Earth.

In March, Idle No More joined forces with Defenders of the Land to launch a Declaration that calls on all People to participate in a campaign that was called Solidarity Spring and Sovereignty Summer.

Idle No More and Defenders of the Land are now transitioning into Sovereignty Summer and people are calling for increased and escalated activities. The actions aim to bring attention to the Harper government agenda that undermines the rights of Indigenous Peoples, Canadian citizens, and the ongoing policies disrupting Indigenous peoples lives such as land claims, third party management, and no free and prior consent to development on Indigenous lands. We are in a critical time where lives, lands, waters and Creation are at-risk and they must be protected.

The Harper government is moving quickly to pass the suite of legislation (C-45, C-428, S-2, S-6, S-8, S-212, C-27, and the First Nation Education Act) that undermines the treaties, our nation-to-nation relationship and Indigenous sovereignty, which is the last stand to protect our lands. Idle No More calls on non-Indigenous people to join Indigenous communities in coordinated non-violent direct actions in the summer. Alternatives will only come to life if we escalate our actions, taking bold non-violent direct action that challenges the illegitimate power of corporations who dictate government policy.

People have been inspired to engage in creative activities of reclaiming, resurgence and resistance in exercising their Nationhood in ways they see appropriate for them. There has been a historic Turtle Lodge Treaty signing ceremony on Indigenous education, nations have reclaimed sacred spaces and peoples continue to protect their lands from invasion. There is a spiritual energy stirring and a large awakening is on the horizon as we transition to Sovereignty Summer. The spirit in which Idle No More began was through the resurgence of Indigenous laws and it is only appropriate for the resurgence of our spiritual and ceremonial practices which are the foundation of our Nations to guide us into this transitioning period. The time for Unity and Solidarity is NOW, our future generations are depending on us and asking us to come together to think about what we will leave for them.

~ A CALLOUT TO ALL INDIGENOUS PEOPLES, SUPPORTERS AND ALLIES OF IDLE NO MORE ~

Leading into Sovereignty Summer, Idle No More calls on all people to join in a grassroots gathering for a Public Awareness Campaign in all Cities, Towns, Indigenous Communities and Villages across Canada and Internationally.

WHEN:
An on-going gathering and occupation, starting on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 5:00pm and continuing once a week, at the same time and at the same place as people/ groups see appropriate for them. As we move closer to summer, Nations/peoples/ groups may want to increase the frequency of their gatherings to each day of the week on a consistent basis.

WHERE:
People can determine for themselves the appropriate location that has significance to them. For those in urban Centres this could be: prominent Government Buildings (Federal or Provincial) in Canada and at Canadian Embassies around the World. For those in their communities, this could be sacred sites, places of cultural importance and locations that are significant to people.

WHY:
To bring awareness to the public at large of the mission of the Idle No More Movement. To honor, fulfill and solidify Unity and Solidarity with all who support Idle No More in your community, city, town or village. This is not a onetime event but an ONGOING CAMPAIGN leading into Sovereignty Summer.

HOW:
Gather, Occupy, Rally and bring your songs, dancing, drums, signs, banner, flags and get to know and network with those who share your passion for the mission of the Idle No More Movement. Those events that wish to end with a March are encouraged to do so if your numbers permit.

The following Events and ongoing Activities have confirmed their participation in this Call to Action:

Our Water is NOT for Sale

Edmonton, AB
Friday May 24, 2013 10:30-2:00
March from Canada Place to Alberta Legislature

Grassroots Gathering Public Awareness Campaign
Toronto, ON
Starting Saturday May 25, 2013 at 5:00pm (Every Saturday)
Queens Park, University Ave and College Street
March afterward if numbers permit

Million First Peoples March and Welcoming the Sacred Journey Walkers
Ottawa, ON
June 21, 2013
Ottawa, ON
Parliament Hill

The inspiration for this Call to Action came from an Idle No More supporter in the Toronto region and other supporters asking for people to come together to take action to bring attention to the current Harper agenda and ongoing narrative of colonialism.

SAVE THE WATER~IDLE NO MORE-In Support of the community of Shawnigan Lake

K6_TY47YS3x.png I received an invitation to this from a friend. I am too far away to participate but thought that since many of my readers do live in Canada, perhaps some of you are close enough to attend, and may wish to do so-or share with friends and relatives who do live close enough.

For those like me living far off-never forget the power of prayer! We cannot be there in person but we can send prayers for those who are, and for the water and land to be protected from all such assaults.

SAVE THE WATER~IDLE NO MORE-In Support of the community of Shawnigan Lake

Water is sacred, and that includes the water in Shawnigan Lake. Please join us on April 21 for a day of action, and in raising awareness and rallying support to the residents of Shawnigan Lake. Please help in joining this community in stopping from 50,000 tons of toxic soil from dumped near their watershed. Shawnigan residents are shocked and are willing to stand in front of dump trucks to stop this from happening. Not to mention, that this watershed is connected to Cowichan and Victoria, etc. This is drinking water for over 7 thousand people, and a home for fish and wildlife. We can’t get rid of Stephen Harper by next week, but we can stand up for the land, water, and the animals. Please join us and come add your voice. Let’s rally in support of saving the water in Shawnigan Lake.
Calling all drummers
flag carriers
speakers
volunteers for the day, and to poster before event
donations of water

A team will be leaving Duncan at 8am to walk to Shawnigan Lake to meet everyone at the rally. The purpose of this walk to hold up signs on the highways and roads to raise awareness to this issue. Anyone is encouraged to join, a water/rest/safety van will follow the team through out the whole walk. The more walkers, the more people can alternate like a relay team. Donations of water and fruit would be welcome alone the way.

Idle No More: Shawn Atleo announces return to helm of Assembly of First Nations, as Chief Theresa Spence agrees to end fast | Canada | News | National Post

Michel Comte / AFP / Getty Images Michel Comte / AFP / Getty Images A young girl and an elder gather on Victoria island for a march on Canada’s parliament in support of Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence’s strike on January 11, 2013.

Shawn Atleo will return to the helm of the Assembly of First Nations just as Chief Theresa Spence is slated to end her fast on Thursday morning, signalling the next phase in a First Nations push to engage with the federal government on treaty implementation.

National Chief Atleo, who has been on doctor-ordered medical leave since Jan. 14, will resume his full duties following a ceremony at a special assembly of British Columbia chiefs in Vancouver at 9:15 a.m. local time Thursday morning.

According to a statement released by the AFN, which has been dogged by infighting and a battle of wills over how to deal with the Harper government, Mr. Atleo will address the assembly and emphasize the way forward and the need to maintain momentum now to achieve real progress and transformative change for First Nations citizens.

With the intensifying demand and opportunity to achieve justice, fairness and political, social and economic development for First Nations, National Chief Atleo will provide an update and set out expectations for next steps, the statement says.

Mr. Atleo will be joined by the assemblys B.C. regional chief and the man he appointed to carry out his duties in his stead, regional chief Roger Augustine, who represents New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. All three chiefs will address leaders gathered at a two-day assembly at a Vancouver recreation centre, which kicks off Thursday.

About an hour before Mr. Atleo officially resumes his duties, at 11 a.m. local time in Ottawa, Ms. Spence and Manitoba edler Raymond Robinson who have held off on solid foods since mid-December in a failed bid to secure a meeting with the Prime Minister, the Governor-General and First Nations leaders will speak publicly about breaking their fast.

Negotiations to end the fast which began more than 40 days ago when she left her northern Ontario community to set up camp on Victoria Island had already ramped up earlier this week, but the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network reported that Ms. Spence faced pressure from within her own council.

They are coming in tonight, a source close to Ms. Spence told APTN. Then it will end.

A statement released by Ms. Spences camp on Wednesday evening confirmed the Attawapiskat chief would end her high-profile liquid-diet protest now that opposition leaders and First Nations supporters have endorsed a Declaration of Commitment.

The 13-point declaration, which among other things promises to maintain pressure on the Harper government to launch a thorough review of its two omnibus budget bills, was endorsed by the AFN executive, the Native Womens Association of Canada, the NDP national caucus and the Liberal Party, the statement said.

Manitoba chiefs gathered in Winnipeg for a two-day assembly also threw their formal support behind the declaration, calling Ms. Spence a brave warrior and commending her for bringing global awareness of the issues impacting Indigenous people across the country.

The statement released jointly by three Manitoba chiefs organizations, with the support of visiting chiefs from Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan struck a stern tone, saying the sovereign Nation-Crown Relationship is severely impaired by the Government of Canada.

Mr. Atleo also expressed his appreciation for Ms. Spences protest.

Our shared goal is simple and clear: to guarantee that our children can achieve the brighter future that they deserve, he said in an AFN statement. This is what every Chief across this country, every member of the Assembly of First Nations, will continue to fight to achieve.

Ethical Enbridge? The real story of Line 9 and the tar sands giga-project | rabble.ca

Ethical Enbridge? The real story of Line 9 and the tar sands giga-project

By Dave Vasey Sakura Saunders Sonia Grant

| January 23, 2013 Ethical Enbridge? The real story of Line 9 and the tar sands giga-project

Change the conversation, support rabble.ca today.

Enbridge’s Line 9 reversal project has become a hot button issue in Ontario as Big Oil seeks to expand tar sands markets in the 401 corridor, the U.S. and potentially Europe. Line 9 runs from Sarnia, Ontario to Montreal, Quebec, passing within 50 km of an estimated 9.1 million people, including 18 First Nation communities, and directly through 99 towns and cities. In true Orwellian language, the reversal is being sold to the public as a jobs-creating, low impact, and ‘ethical’ project. It is none of these things.

Early in the application process, Enbridge misled the public by promoting the Line 9 reversal as part of its $3.2 billion “Light Oil Market Access” initiative. Pressure by environmental groups clarified Enbridge’s intent to pump tar sands dilbit through Line 9. The early mistrust established by Enbridge foreshadows the ethical doublespeak the public is expected to embrace with the Line 9 reversal. Indeed, the tar sands giga-project is one of the most violent projects on Earth and the extraction of dirty fuel represents at once a blatant case of environmental racism, climate chaos, and ecological catastrophe.

Line 9 was built in 1976 and was designed to carry light crude oil. In July 2012, the National Energy Board (NEB) approved Enbridge’s application to reverse the flow of the pipeline from Sarnia to Westover, Ontario, and is currently reviewing Enbridge’s application to reverse the rest of the pipeline to Montreal. Crucially, the reversal isn’t about the direction of the pipeline flow, but its contents: Enbridge is now openly seeking approval to transport tar sands dilbit from Alberta through Line 9. This raises multiple flags.

First, Line 9 is a 37 years old pipeline and the risks of a spill are higher for dilbit pipelines (particularly old ones) as tar sands crude is more corrosive, and transported under higher heat and pressure. Moreover, if a spill occurs the impact of dilbit is more severe for health, water and land, as dilbit contains higher levels of toxic carcinogens, including naptha and benzene. In 2010, these risks were brought into sharp relief when Enbridge’s Line 6B (originally constructed to transport light crude in 1969) ruptured spilling 20,000 barrels of dilbit into the Kalamzoo River in Michigan, a disaster that continues to have devastating impacts on surrounding communities and ecosystems. Most importantly however is the question of ‘ethics’ and how the Canadian state is responding to the apparent human rights and environmental crisis created by tar sands expansion.

Debunking the jobs argument

A core argument to support the Line 9 reversal has been job creation. In general, job creation has not been the goal of Big Oil — instead the industry has strived towards mechanization and low-cost labour. The ‘jobs’ argument for tar sands creates a fictitious division between the economy and the environment, attempting to pit employment against health and environmental concerns.

Indigenous Sovereignty and Human Rights: Idle No More as a Decolonizing Force

After reading an article called “stupid no more” from Kevin Annett posted on MNN I *felt* that it was condescending and simply not getting the real point, my gut feeling was that the man was piqued that attention was being drawn away from his pet project more than anything. The excerpt below gives a very clear and sensible counterpoint to the charges in the MNN piece, and I hope you will all go and read the entire article-I am very grateful to have found this blog!
“At first I was skeptical about the Idle No More movement. I didn’t want to lead my people to the government and beg for rights and responsibilities that the Creator gave to us. But I became involved with Idle No More because I could feel the energy of the youth rising and I did not want this energy to go to waste. I wanted to show them that the energy which we as peoples often internalize in negative ways is better directed to challenging the colonial framework that operates in all our lives. As the movement grows, the challenge of Idle No More is to continue moving beyond rhetoric and towards a fundamental reconfiguration of the colonial structure of Canada. Above and beyond, it must always be more than an emotionally frothy appeal to the Canadian government for justice and morality. We must be strategic, yet we must also act on the nation-to-nation spirit and intent of Treaty. The message of love, peace, and non-violent protest is essential to the movement. With this spirit at the forefront, we must seek to educate Settler populations and heal our Indigenous nations from the processes of genocide which we have experienced. Idle No More means re-establishing ourselves as sovereign nations, and empowering Settler people to fulfill their responsibilities as partners in sacred relationships of Treaty.”

Decolonization

by Kirstin Scansen

Last week I was compelled into a leadership role with the Prince Albert Idle No More rally. Prince Albert is a growing city in central Saskatchewan, with a population of about 35,000. The traditional Nehithaw place name is kistahpinanihk, which means “meeting place”. Prince Albert has a high Indigenous population and is surrounded by key sites in the history of Treaty 6. It would be ideal to say that Indigenous-Settler relations here have been harmonious, a peaceful meeting place of sorts, but the presence of colonialism is heavy. Surrounded by medium and maximum security prisons, housed disproportionately with Indigenous inmates, oppression can be felt strongly. Racism and racialised violence are pervasive. But there is also a strong regional history of Indigenous resurgence and resistance to colonialism; key sites of the Riel Rebellion are within a 30 minute drive from city limits, and Indigenous languages, ceremonies, and land-based…

Colonial No More – Turtle Island Chapter

Colonial No More – Turtle Island Chapter

A friend of mine, Ian Ki’laas Caplette. created this on facebook. The link to it is at the bottom of this post. I find his description so inspiring and beautiful that I wanted to share it with you here. Please check out the event on facebook if you use facebook, and share it with everyone you know.

We truly are the ones we have been waiting for-the time is now for the old order to end, and we are the ones who will begin the change to a wiser and more heart centered world. Join with us wherever you are-and stand up in whatever way you are inspired to. Create art, have a march or a dance, post signs, print this out and make into bookmarks and leave in books and magazines-there are as many ways to begin as there are people to do them!

No one is coming to save us, no one is kicking out the bad guys and retooling our governments, no one is giving away buckets of free money-it’s up to US!

Luckily we have so many leaders who are already starting things, all we have to do is join in, tell others, keep things moving and singing and the changes WILL come.

This is not the time to sit it out and wait any more, get up, stand up-stand up for your rights!(To paraphrase Peter Tosh;-)

Colonial No More – Turtle Island Chapter
Many have been awakened and become active through Idle No More. We have come a long way in a short time and it is necessary to confront the causes of the genocide against Indigenous peoples globally.

Colonial borders and structures have been erected over our rights, our lands, and our spirits and we have taken the full force of colonization for generations. Our lands have been poisoned, our peoples have suffered torture, murder, kidnapping, forced relocations, and systemic assaults on our cultures and societies.

We have had enough.

Indigenous peoples have not been idle but we have been mired in a colonial relationship with the Crown, the Commonwealth State of Canada, the “republic” of the United States of America, and other legacies of genocide masquerading as “democricies”. This has not been of our choosing as deceptions from the colonial governments since contact have used lies, biological weaponry, forced indoctrinations of our children through residential and boarding schools, installed puppet governments through the Indian Act and other genocidal policies aimed at “civilizing” Indigenous peoples, and the denial of wrongdoing with no willingness to address this fundamental injustice.

The colonial relationship is not only an attack on Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island (North America). It is an assault on Settlers to these lands, Indigenous peoples globally, and to the biosphere as the force of colonialism is not only directed against Indigenous peoples, but the global population and the environment as well. Large-scale extractive industries are destroying ecosystems and oceans around the world and many of the lands they are destroying are the ones Indigenous peoples rely on for their sustenance and cultural survival. We are acting as the early warning system. In fact, we have been doing so for a very long time.

From the Basques to the Maori, from the Hawai’ians to the Mayans. From Chiapas to Palestine, from Kanesatake to Ireland. We have suffered from colonial domination and genocide of our cultures and murders of our peoples at the hands of our oppressors. Our experiences have shown us that even our own leadership is capable of becoming agents for the state, facilitating the destruction of our lands and weakening our societies for profits and power. Some are working right now to undermine our collective abilities to be Indigenous in our own lands, citing “progress”, or “self-governance” with colonial definitions.

We have also seen the constant gendered violence against Indigenous women, primary targets of state genocide and patriarchal ideologies forced into our societies, maintained by colonial structures while perpetuated by unhealthy men and enabled through racist and sexist policies of disempowerment.

We say no more to this.

We say no more to being subjected to colonial domination.

We say no more to colonial leadership, no matter their origins or their “race”.

We call out to the global community to form alliances between our groups for the purpose of active liberation from colonial domination and an end to the assault on the biosphere.

We call out for reciprocal support from all peoples everywhere to end imperialism.

We call for a disruption to the flow of capital, extractive industries, shipping by land, sea, and air, and for the defense of our lands, our peoples, and our futures by any means necessary.
