First Nation Man Creates ‘Sober Is Sexi’ Campaign

Michael Scott is a 25 year old from the Sturgeon Lake First Nation who has over come many obstacles in his lifetime. He was raised in what many would call dysfunctional settings. Being placed from foster home to foster home for many of his younger years. Mike suffered with alcohol and drug abuse for most of his teen years and over dosed on cocaine at the age of 17. He became a father at the age of 19 and was a single parent and on his own at those times in his life. Mike tragically lost his mother to a lifetime of substance abuse and gave up all hope and turned to that bottle for comfort. It wasn’t until his daughter opened up his eyes and made him realize the true meaning of life that he was then able to begin his healing journey.

Tipis Take Over National Mall

Members of the Cowboy Indian Alliance have arrived in Washington DC to set up camp near the White House to tell President Obama to reject the Keystone XL pipeline. According to DC Media Group, 7 tipis are up and more will be going up this week.
Ranchers, farmers and members of native communities along the pipeline route formed the Cowboy Indian Alliance to stand against energy company TransCanada’s efforts to acquire land under eminent domain.

Indian Princess Party! – Miss Indian World Talent Presentation – 2014 Gathering of Nations

Thursday evening was the talent portion for the 2015 Miss Indian World Pageant which was held at the Albuquerque Convention Center in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Kiva Auditorium was packed with onlookers from every part of Indian Country. Opening the festivities for the night were popular Navajo comedy duo – James & Ernie, also entertaining the crowd with a short musical set was Susan Aglukark (Inuk/Inuit).
Many of this contestants came ready to woo the crowd with their traditional talents which included instruction on how to use a bow & arrow, traditional storytelling, grinding corn, creating native fashions, and sharing dances to name a few. Crowning of the new 2015 Miss Indian World will take place on April 26th *Saturday* @ 7:00pm inside the Pit.

Moccasins: Steps Through Time

A new exhibit featuring some of the best and most distinctive moccasins from the collection at the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian will be unveiled on Saturday, April 19. “Moccasins: Steps Through Time” showcases the major decorative styles and structures in types of indigenous footwear worn throughout the US and Canada. A curator tour is scheduled for 2:00 pm on the day of the opening.
Visitors will explore the significance of beadwork and quillwork on moccasins, how living in extreme environments affects footwear design and structure, the cultural significance of special designs, and view exceptional examples of children’s moccasins.

Artist Steven Grounds – Native Evolution

We love it when our readers share with us unique talent in the community. A reader suggested we check out Native Evolution and we had to share with you!
Steven Grounds, from the Navajo and Euchee tribes, was born in Pawnee, Oklahoma, in 1977. He has a life-long passion with art. After graduating with his Bachelor’s Degree in American Indian Studies from Haskell Indian Nations University in 2004, he began to focus his artistic vision under the moniker Native Evolution. It is a study in portraiture of modern Native American people along with the concepts revolving around urban styles and computer graphics.
Grounded and firmly embraced in his Native American culture, Steven’s vision is to preserve the blessings of his tribal heritage through sharing the images of old and new from deep within. Steven honors, promotes, blends and transitions our older images with his modern, clean and urban-inspired visions.

It’s April 24th *Thursday* and thousands of Natives from all over the United States will be descending upon Albuquerque, New Mexico., for the 31st Annual Gathering of Nations Powwow 2014.
Before the Gathering crew sets it stage to host a vast variety of traditional dances, beautiful regalia, wonderful powwow songs, delicious fry bread,contemporary artists, and to visitors from all over the world, lets take a sneak peak at all the behind the scenes happenings going on before Gathering starts.
This morning when I picked up my GON performer credentials, I over heard a lady in front of me say to the counter guy that shes been coming this powwow since its started! And the counter guy responded to her, “well you got me, I’ve been taking tickets here for the past 20 years” . So as you guys can see, this powwow is very special and has a loyal following lasting generations.

Howl at the Moon: Silverfox speaks for wolves

Silverfox is named for foxes, but is passionate about protecting wolves. A contributor to NAMA’s new WOLF CD, this artist is a performer at numerous powwows each season. Silverfox shares his love of music and his loyalty to his Apache heritage in this visit.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Trip to Gathering of Nations

Arrive Early, Stay Late
Over 150,000 visitors each year! You have to plan ahead to get around this crowd!
Gathering packs in a lot into two days. It’s really a 4 day Pow Wow jammed into two days!
Lines form early to get in the door. But you can skip some of those lines by buying your tickets online in advance! Look for ticket special in January of each year.

Natives Protest Christina Fallin’s Band

Christina Fallin, daughter of Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin, has learned nothing after her previous run-in withcultural appropriation last month. Instead she seems to be purposefully provoking Native Americans with her antics. In her latest bout with controversy, her band Pink Pony took to Facebook before their performance at the Norman Music Festival and hinted that they would be in “full regalia” at the show. Native American activists got wind of this and showed up to protest.

Stage 49 Bonanza – 2014 Gathering of Nations

Did anyone see the Drag Queen in random photos on Facebook from this past weekends Gathering of Nations Powwow 2014? Yup, that drag queen was me – Comedian Charlie Ballard. This year I was invited back to host Stage 49 and it was really awesome! After my hosting duties were over, I walked around the powwow grounds and did a meet & greet with everyone! These guys are a rap tandem hailing from Oklahoma City most known for their appearance on NBC’s, “America’s Got Talent” . Hopi Artist Duane Koyawena Mixes Traditional and Contemporary

Duane Koyawena is a self taught artist currently living in Flagstaff, AZ. He is Hopi from Second Mesa, AZ and Tewa from San Juan Pueblo, NM.His work not only graces the canvas, but custom shoes as well.His path has been a difficult one, but he has overcome certain struggles and is now proud to be sober.
“I have definitely put the struggle in “struggling artist” by having had a serious addiction to alcohol for most of my youth. That all changed in 2008 when I finally began my road to sobriety and reestablished with my Hopi way of life.”

This is a small to medium sized vest. It has a black wool trade cloth back and the back is lined with black satiny fabric.The measurements are:
20? from one armpit to the other straight across the front
17? from top of shoulder seam to front bottom of vest
22? circumference of each arm hole (very roomy)
15 3/4? from scooped back neck seam to back bottom
This vest is the work of 3 ladies, Debbie K., Chippewa did the rosettes at the bottom,Dee M., Papago & Azteca, did the rose and leaves, Osalita, Cherokee/Choctaw did the Tepee with a warm fire inside and smoke coming from the top, plus the ‘rope’ design beading along the edges.
